Clinical Photonics Lab (CPL)

The main scope of Clinical Photonics Lab (CPL) is research at the cutting edge of Advanced Optical Technologies (AOT) in biology and medicine - sampling and treatment of live tissues and cells by light.
The mission of the Lab is to foster collaboration between diverse groups of researchers building partnerships between physicians, basic scientists as well as industrial and academic investigators.
The CPL research directions comprise both application and fundamental approaches towards resolving the current medical demands in treatment and diagnostics.
The current projects recently launched with CPL include
- Exploration of new concepts for sensor-regulated tissue specific laser surgery.
- Autofluorescence Imaging Navigation for Cancer Laser Removal
- Development of Fiber Sensor for In Vivo Monitoring of Epithelium Vessel/Capillary Spatial Pattern Alterations
- Development of Video Endoscopy Hyperspectral and Fluorescence Imaging Diagnostic and Biopsy/Microsurgery Guidance for Stomach Cancer
- Experimental Study of the Relationship between the Real and Imaginary Parts of the Refraction Index of Human Hemoglobin versus the Theoretical Prediction by the Kramers-Kronig Analysis
- Development of Nanoparticle Photosensitizers for Singlet Oxygen Based Photodynamic Therapy and Disinfection
- Biospectroscopy Facility for Determination of Microscopic Optical Properties of Biological Tissues (Absorption, Scattering and Anisotropy factor) within the wavelength range 190-2500 nm and Fluorescence Excitation-Emission matrix within the wavelength range 320-800 nm
- Intelligent stimulators of specific channels of visual perception: improvement of Cyclopean 3D vision based on 3D video simulation setup to enhance visual perception channels
A regular lecture and seminar-practicum course of Biophotonics and Nanobiophotonics has been established in CPL for students of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), Max Planck Research Group and FAU University Clinics. The public lecture "Laser Medicine and Clinical Photonics" performed by A. Douplik can be watched here (in German).
CPL invites internationally recognized experts to perform lectures and seminars on the SAOT site. The work language in the lab is English and international PhD and Master students are welcome to apply and join us.
A close cooperation with the Departments and Clinics of FAU, international research groups, local and international industry is being actively developed.
Clinical Photonics Lab was established on February 28th, 2008 as a part of Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany.
